Lincoln & York's Recyclable Coffee Packaging Range receives international recognition

The recyclable packaging solutions, developed by A. Hatzopoulos S.A. for the UK coffee roaster, have been awarded with the prestigious WorldStar Award 2021. In partnership with Lincoln & York, last year we brought to the UK market a complete all-PE recyclable coffee packaging range. Based on the X-CYCLE PE concept, the high-performance films were designed to preserve the coffee aroma & flavor and at the same time to be recyclable through the recycling stream in the UK for polyethylene. Having already received the 2020 GOLD Greek Packaging Award, this new recyclable coffee packaging range is now gaining the highest level of international recognition!

Summarising key knowledge and the industry guidelines on the topic of plastics recyclability, the Handbook is a practical guide for all Product & Packaging Development-, R&D-, Purchasing- and Sustainability Managers that are looking to evaluate and (re)design their flexible packaging for recycling.

A.Hatzopoulos S.A. has partnered with HEMA for their new sustainable coffee packaging launch in 2020. In response to the retailer’s eco vision, we undertook the challenge to redesign the conventional packaging film for recyclability and to bring on HEMA’s coffee shelves the new sustainable packs within only few months’ time.

Lincoln & York's recyclable coffee packaging solutions, developed by A. Hatzopoulos S.A., have won the GOLD prize at this year’s "Packaging Innovation Awards 2020".

As an international supplier of flexo printed films, with an integrated, full-service pre-press and plate-making department, we decided to participate in the FlexoExpert Certification Program last year and make sure that we are providing consistent high quality flexo, in line with our corporate philosophy.

Flexible packaging is an important part of our modern world. Mainly made of plastic films, it helps ensure products reach consumers safe and fresh, preserving nutrients, taste, and quality. Being very light and thin, flexible packaging materials reduce the impact of transportation, reduce waste of the goods they protect and usually use far less material than alternative packaging options.

Minimising product and packaging waste with low weight and volume is key in a circular economy. But an equally important objective is to design flexible packaging so that it will be correctly disposed of, collected, and efficiently sorted into suitable material fractions for recycling. These sorted materials must be recyclable into ‘new’ ones that can be used in market applications, displacing virgin material.

Flexo equipment upgrade

During the last two years, A. Hatzopoulos S.A. has systematically upgraded and modernised its flexo plate making and press equipment, in line with the highest quality standards.

Among others, a state of the art, 10-color, Miraflex flexo press has been installed, as well as a new flexo CTP system for imaging photopolymer plates, a UV imaging system and a washing unit. Recently we invested also in the advanced Sibress FlexoControl 3D Plus plates quality control system; a precision measuring device for analyzing all key parameters of the flexographic plates.

We are part of the CHEP Circular Supply Chains Model, which contributes to saving important natural resources.
