Certified Recyclability for your Flexible Packaging

A 'How-to' Guide on the certification schemes and labels you can use to declare the recyclability of your flexible packaging!

Consumers today look for products with the lowest possible impact on the environment, with recyclability being one of the main attributes they seek from a product's packaging. Until recently, the end of a pack's life received minor attention. But the circular economy has changed that radically, highlighting the critical factor of the full life-cycle of a package and its importance when it comes to packaging development.

The growing global conversation around sustainability has a huge impact on how brands evaluate their packaging design and on-pack communication choices, specifically story- telling, packaging certification and labelling, all playing major role in consumer behaviour. Indeed, as the value chain gradually switches towards a circular, zero-waste model in response to the increasing environmental awareness and also the recent regulations, sustainability claims and certifications related to packaging design gain momentum in brand communication.

In absence of an EU-wide, consistent approach to packaging recyclability certification, packaging development managers across the value chain turn to independent certification schemes, developed by expert institutes and industry organisations according to specific packaging design requirements.

The present Guide refers to the most widely-known and accepted recyclability certification schemes currently existing in the market, namely Cyclos-HTP, Interseroh and RecyClass. Providing information and guidance on how to certify your packaging's recyclability and label it accordingly, we aim to help you deliver a clear and transparent message that connects with the environmentally-conscious consumers and builds confidence.
